English: Caption: Mont Alto Sanatorium, high in mountains of Mont Alto State Forest Park, located in Franklin County, Pa., on Route 997, between Chambersburg and Waynesboro. 1 print (postcard): linen texture, color; 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. The Mont Alto Sanatorium was one of three large specialized TB treatment facilities in Pennsylvania. It started as a tuberculosis sanatorium, White Pine Camp, in 1818. Was named the Mont Alto Sanatorium in 1907, renamed South Mountain Sanatorium in 1918, and the Samuel G. Dixon State Hospital in 1956 (1200 beds, 700 staff). Ceased to function as a tuberculosis hospital in 1968. Turned into South Mountain Restoration Center in 1968 for elderly persons from Pennsylvania state mental hospitals and centers (1100 residents in 1970). The Main Building No. 2 was abandoned in 1985, Building No. 1. is still in operation. The Center was downsized but continues to function under the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Pennsylvania DHS. There are other tenants on former Mont Alto Sanatorium campus: Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, VisionQuest Academy, Abraxas, South Mountain Post Office and DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families secure treatment unit.
