Istoriografija, u užem shvatanju je skup istraživanja u istoriji, posvećen određenoj temi ili istorijskom periodu, ili zbir istorijskih radova koji imaju ideološko, lingvističko ili nacionalno jedinstvo (na primjer marksistička, engleska ili francuska istoriografija).[1][2]

Istoriografija, u širem shvatanja je posebna istorijska disciplina, koja proučava istoriju istorijske nauke. Istoriografija provjerava koliko se tačno naučnih metoda primjenjuje u pisanju istorijskih radova, fokusirajući se na autora, njegove izvore, odvajanje činjenica iz tumačenja, kao i stil, autorovu pristrasnost.

Istoriografija je nastala u Grčkoj sa Hekatejem Miletskim i Herodotom. Herodot je dao objašnjenje zašto je napisao svoju Istoriju, rekavši da ne želi da se ti ljudi izgube u izmaglici vremena. On je želio da sačuva uspomenu na djela počinjena od strane Grka i Varvara. Motivi za kreativnost drugih istoričara antike će biti drugačiji. Tukidid, na primjer, je nastojao da pokaže vječnu borbu za vlast, po njegovom mišljenju, jednu od karakteristika ljudske prirode. Polibije je tvrdio da je krajnja i najviša tačka svog razvoja i istorije cijelog svijeta Rimsko carstvo. Tit Livije je u istoriji tražio „model za nas i našu zemlju“.
